The Legend of Khmelnytsky and his Alder Cross
In the middle of the 17th century, during the
time of the Cossacks, a simple but at the same time extraordinary artifact was created: a candleholder made of durable alder wood, with an engraved cross in the center.
This candholder was not ordinary. It belonged to the respected voivode of the Cossacks, Bohdan Khmelnytsky. Cossacks often saw Khmelnytsky praying by the flickering light of a candle held by this wooden artifact.
It was said that the shadows cast by the fiery flame across the cross were like the dancing spirits of the ancestors who guided and protected their leader.
When Khmelnytsky led the Cossacks during the Khmelnytsky Uprising, he took a candleholder with him. He believed that it brought him divine guidance and strength during those difficult times.
